FAQs

What is your late policy?
It is very difficult for us to accommodate late arrivals. Please arrive early! If you are a few minutes late we will do our best to accommodate you, but if you are more than 7 minutes late we unfortunately have to cancel your appointment, at cost.

What should I wear?
Please wear comfortable clothes, such as gym attire. We do not have a restroom on site, so please arrive in the clothes you plan to scan in. Do not wear any items with metal or hard plastic, such as buttons, zippers, jewelry, watches, hair clips, bras with metal clasps or underwires. Inform the test administrator if you have any metal in your body, such as a pin or replacement joint.

Where are you located?
We are located at 98 Battery Street, San Francisco, very close to Salesforce tower. We are a 2 minute walk from Embarcadero BART station.

Should I fast?
Fasting is not required. However, please try to scan under similar circumstances each time you scan.

I'm on my period, will that impact my results?
No. Menstruation does not impact your DEXA results.

Is there parking?
There is street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. There are also parking garages located on Battery street very close to our office ($4 for 15 mins). If you are driving, please factor in any time needed to secure parking before your appointment.

What does each appointment entail?

Your appointment includes three sections: your scan, a results review, and an exercise/nutrition programming design session. Your full appointment last 30 minutes.

How much radiation exposure do I get from a DEXA scan?
Each Kalos DEXA scan is 0.4 microsieverts, equivalent to the radiation from eating 4 bananas. It's a very low, very safe amount of radiation. For more information on DEXA and radiation, see this visual.

Will working out right before the DEXA scan affect the accuracy of my results?
No. But you should try to scan under similar circumstances each time you scan.

I'm pregnant or trying to get pregnant. Should I get a DEXA scan?
We generally advise pregnant women NOT to get the DEXA scan because it is an X-ray based test. While the radiation exposure is extremely low, we still prefer to take precautions to keep you safe.

I've had a barium exam or injection of contrast dye. Should I get a DEXA scan?
Wait at least 2 weeks to scan if you've had a barium exam or an injection of contrast dye. These exams can interfere with the accuracy of your DEXA scan. If you are not sure what health exams you have taken, please consult your doctor.

I have a pacemaker. Is the scan safe for me?
Yes, the scan is safe for people with pacemakers.

Am I getting a diagnostic bone density DEXA scan?
No. Kalos offers full body composition scans. We do not provide medical diagnoses on bone density or osteoporosis.
